چکیده

This document describes the lexical interface for nite-state syntax as it is currently implemented and used for the development of the French constraint grammar. The system includes nite-state transducers for multiword expressions, for capitalised, misspelt or unknown words and for accent recovery. It also encodes general multiword expressions such as dates or idioms. The tokeniser includes a nite-state automaton for simple tokens and a more complex process for possibly ambiguous, multiword tokens.

Eleftherios Avramidis and Jonas Kuhn: Exploiting XLE's finite state interface in LFG-based statistical machine translation

We present the addition of a morphological generation component to an LFG-based Statistical Machine Translation System, taking advantage of existing morphological grammars and the FST (Finite State Transducer) processing pipeline of the XLE system. The extended syntax-driven translation system takes separate stochastic decisions for lemmata and morphological tags; the role of finite-state morph...

The production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition

This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

Syntax-based Alignment of Multiple Translations: Extracting Paraphrases and Generating New Sentences

We describe a syntax-based algorithm that automatically builds Finite State Automata (word lattices) from semantically equivalent translation sets. These FSAs are good representations of paraphrases. They can be used to extract lexical and syntactic paraphrase pairs and to generate new, unseen sentences that express the same meaning as the sentences in the input sets. Our FSAs can also predict ...

Towards a unified framework for sub-lexical and supra-lexical linguistic modeling

Conversational interfaces have received much attention as a promising natural communication channel between humans and computers. A typical conversational interface consists of three major systems: speech understanding, dialog management and spoken language generation. In such a conversational interface, speech recognition as the front-end of speech understanding remains to be one of the fundam...
